And, because he's very lucky (and has amazing parents) he was surprised with a week's holiday in Mallorca - and the best part was I was invited too! So a few days later we flew from Bristol Airport and arrived about 2 and a bit hours later in Palma. We then travelled for an hour by coach to our hotel - Pollenca Park. The hotel was gorgeous, with a lovely pool and staff, and best of all a buffet for breakfast and tea!
The cathedral in Palma with the famous stained glass window that forms petals on the floor. Unfortunately this only happens when the sun shines through, and as you can see that day was particularly cloudy.

One of my favourite parts of the whole holiday - visiting the Caves of Drach! I highly recommend going if you go to Mallorca, it really is unmissable.

This is inside the caves - can you make out the boat in the lower left hand corner? I won't spoil the surprise as to the main feature of the caves, but it is absolutely spectacular.

This is a crochet technique that involves putting stitches on the hook in one row, and then removing them in the next. It's really simple, and although it takes a bit more time to work up than regular crochet, it produces such a lovely warm piece!

This pattern is great for beginners, and so I'll write it how a beginner would understand it. Writing things in this way was so helpful to me when I was learning, so I hope this will be easy to follow.

You will need:
- 4.5 Tunisian/Afghan crochet hook (as we are using DK weight yarn it is recommended to use a size or two above what you'd normally use. So, if you're using sock or chunky weight for your gloves, keep this in mind!)
- 100g DK weight wool (here I've used Stylecraft Special DK)
- Darning needle
- Ruler

Firstly, there are some measurements you'll need to make:

A = Your wrist span + 2cm. This will tell you roughly how many chain stitches to make at the beginning. This is only roughly, though, because once you've done a few rows you may find it will be too big/small for your wrist and go back and make adjustments.

B = How long you want the cuff to be.

C = The length from your wrist to where your thumb is joined to your palm. This will decide how long the widest part of the glove needs to be.

D = The entire length of your wrist to roughly the tops of your knuckles. This is flexible, and will depend on how you like your gloves to sit - I like mine just above my knuckles, but you may prefer yours below if you're going to be moving your fingers a lot in these.

Here are my measurements, for reference:
A = 8cm, B =10.5cm, C = 5.5cm, D = 8.5cm

So, in the pattern, where you see my measurements in this font, be sure to swap in your measurement! The measurement needed will be in brackets.

To start, I suggest watching these videos: how to start and the basic stitch, how to increase stitches, and how to decrease. Note there are two ways to decrease - you can do either! I use the second one that is demonstrated in this video.

In the case of increasing, you will need to use the increases described in the video at 0:38 and at 3:18.

Ready? Good!

Step 1: My (A) measured 8cm and I chained 32 to begin with. If your A is less than mine chain less, or if it's bigger than 8cm, chain a few more.

Step 2: Work the basic Tunisian stitch into each chain. Continue to do the forward (pulling up the loops) and reverse (removing the loops) rows until your piece measures (B) 10.5cm. End on a reverse.

Step 3: Now increase by 1 at the beginning of the row (shown here at 0:38), then pull up loops along the row as you would normally, and then increase by 1 at the end of the row (shown here at 3:18). Do the reverse row as normal.

Step 4: We're going to be increasing again, so: increase by 1 at the beginning of the row (shown here at 0:38), then pull up loops along the row as you would normally, and then increase by 1 at the end of the row (shown here at 3:18). Do the reverse row as normal.

Step 5: Increase one more time: increase by 1 at the beginning of the row (shown here at 0:38), then pull up loops along the row as you would normally, and then increase by 1 at the end of the row (shown here at 3:18). Do the reverse row as normal.

Step 6: Now work the basic Tunisian stitch until your piece measures (C) 5.5cm. End on a reverse.

Step 7: Now we are going to decrease by 2 stitches. To do this, decrease (shown here) by 1 stitch near the beginning of the row - in either the first or second stitch. Then pull up loops as normal until you reach near the end, and decrease by 1 stitch there too. Do the reverse row as normal.

Step 8: Now work the basic Tunisian stitch until the piece measures (D) 8.5cm from the very first increase row to the top, or if you like, until the whole piece measures (B + D) 19cm. End on a reverse.

(It is now up to you how you bind off - I like to leave the stitches how they are and just bind off as you would with normal crochet, but you could single crochet into each of the loops on the last row!)

Step 9: Now fold the piece in half and sew up, remembering to not to sew from the row in step 3 up to the row in step 7 as this will be the thumb hole!

And there you go! Make two of these and you'll have yourself a warm yet not restrictive pair of fingerless gloves :)

Have you noticed all the spray painted mason jars that look so gorgeous? Inspired by these from She Knows and these lovely painted vases by Little Gray Fox and also these by la chica de la casa de caramelo (page in spanish) I dug out a used pasta sauce jar and set to work.

Re-cycled painted jars:

You will need:

An empty jar that has been washed and cleaned, and left to dry overnight.

Glue. I'd use ModPodge if I had any, but had to settle for PVA. This didn't seem to affect my results but I don't know how ModPodge would compare!

Acrylic paint

What to do:

First mix up the colour you want to make your jar. You shouldn't need too much, because when you add the glue it should make the mixture enough to cover the jar. But it is always better to be over-prepared!

Then add your glue to the paint mix and stir it in thoroughly.

Now add the mix to the inside of jar a little at a time, swirling it around the jar as much as you can after each addition. This bit takes a lot of patience - I mean A LOT - but it's worth it to get a clean result.

Keep going until the jar is covered at least 3/4 of the way up. If at any point you think you will run out of mixture, add more glue.

Now get some old news paper or a plastic bag (something you can throw away after) and turn the jar upside down (so the opening is face down) onto it. You should see the paint run all the way down the jar to cover the last quarter. If not, add more of the mixture to the jar.

You'll have to leave the jar stood like that as long as possible (I recommend a good 24hrs!). But to ensure it doesn't get stuck to the paper/bag try to lift it up every few hours and move it to another part of the paper. You'll be surprised at how much mixture is on the paper for the first few times!

And there you have it - a pretty painted jar all of your own making! Do try to leave it upside down for as long as possible, because if you turn it up too soon you'll get horrible streaks down the sides and a big pool at the bottom that won't dry (I'm speaking from experience here).

Bear in mind that if you used normal PVA glue like me your jar will NOT be waterproof! That means only fake flowers I'm afraid. I believe that if you use ModPodge, and give the inside of the jar a full coating of ModPodge after the paint mix has dried it will be waterproof, but I can't back this up!

I created this lovely dolphin for my friend Katie, who is crazy about dolphins. The pattern is really easy to follow, and although it isn't free, it's not much to pay for a birthday/Christmas present!

This project is easy and quick, and could even be done around the out side of a glass! (away from the mouth area of course)

This one is great for getting the kids crafting, and if they have a variety of craft punches (or some imaginative designs that the adults can cut out) there's endless possibilities!

You will need:

A craft punch

Mod podge (I couldn't find any in my local hobbycraft so I used plain 'ol PVA instead, and it gave a nice 'frosted effect')

A glass tea light holder/cup

Paint brush and something to put the glue in

Tissue paper in colours of your choice

Step 1: Select your tissue paper. My front room is a mixture of warm reds and yellows, so I chose these.

Step 2: Use the craft punch to make your shapes. You can either be sporadic or go crazy!

Step 3: Place some of the glue on the glass.

Step 4: Then put your tissue paper shape over where you put the glue.

Step 5: Use a little bit of glue to cover the tissue paper. Try to paint from the middle of the shape outwards, going from the centre to north, centre to east, centre to south etc.

Step 6: Continue doing this until the glass is covered how you like it! Leave to dry, and it should dry either clear or opaque depending on your glue.

Don't forget to cover the bottom!

Leave your glass to dry for an hour or so, and ta dah! You're done!
I put a tea light in mine as soon as it was ready and took a few (dark) snaps:
I love this little addition to our mantle, and am definitely planning on making more in different colours, and some glass tumblers too!
But this Sunday the sun has inspired my mum and I to re-visit cooking, and what better a thing to make than yummy, sweet, sickly, crumbly fudge?!

I used this simple and easy to follow recipe! The only change I made was, as my microwave doesn't have a 70% power option, during the first 8 minutes in the microwave I did 4 minutes on 80% and then 4 minutes on 50%. For the next 6 minutes I used 80% power.

(Be VERY careful - the mixture gets very very hot, so I wouldn't do this alone.)

The result was a crumbly gorgeous flavour fudge! This mixture made loooads, so next time I'll probably half all the ingredients, as the fudge got quite sickly after three or four squares!

The video is really simple to follow and it's surprising how fast your knitting works up!

However, it's starting to get sunnier here, and I really couldn't get away with making a super chunky winter scarf. So I decided to make a 'summer scarf' - with two strands of DK wool instead.

It was a nightmare. It looks quite nice, but sewing it together to make a cowl was horrendous. It looks pretty bad, so I'll have to wear it with my hair down, haha!

I would definitely recommend giving arm knitting a go, though. Just make sure to do it with chunky wool! I can't wait to try it again when it starts getting a bit colder.

I go on the forum quite often and have made some friends who have the same interests as me and also some that have opened my eyes to new things! As a frequent poster on the Arts and Crafts thread my projects were picked up on by Kat, the new editor of A.Y.M.E's magazine Cheers. She e-mailed me and asked me if I would like to feature in the Crafts Corner of the magazine and I was of course happy to contribute!

You can see me in the online version of the April 2013 Cheers found here.

I'm so happy that something I've made has been good enough to be in a magazine, and I can't think of a better cause to support.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01969396544310442186noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3645965136875537083.post-57147791661048222212013-04-01T13:29:00.001+01:002013-04-21T20:52:34.795+01:00Rosie's Baby Blanket! Now that I've finished Rosie's blanket (yay!) I thought I could show you in a bit more detail how I went about making it.

I used double knitting yarn - it doesn't really matter what type as long as it's a baby brand to make sure it's really soft and gentle! - and a 4.00mm hook. You can use a larger or smaller hook but it will make the blanket larger or smaller respectively.

My blanket is 6 x 5, and I wanted to only put flower squares on the corners to make them a bit more special. This meant I needed 26 normal granny squares and 4 flower squares.

A pattern similar to the one I used to make the granny squares can be found here. This pattern is in UK terms, but for US terms simply change any treble crochets to double crochets. In order to make them the same size as the flower squares you'll need to do a total of 4 rounds (the guide only shows 3) and then do a row of single crochets around the edge to finish.
The pattern I used to make the flower squares is here. This pattern is in US terms.

Use this picture as a guide of how many squares of each colour to make and the colours for the flowers.

Once you've made all the squares you'll need to join them. Due to the single crochet edging the best way to join them is using this method.

Now for the border. I wanted my border to be very simple as I didn't want to distract from the flowers, so I opted for doing a row of double crochets (US) in pink all around into every single crochet - when it gets to the join you can either double crochet just into the single crochets you see, or double crochet into the join (which is what I did):

As for the corners, I just made a corner roughly where the corner of the flower square was by doing a double crochet into the single crochet of the corner, ch1 then double crochet into the same stitch.
I hope that's easy to understand, but if not leave a comment and I'll be happy to do a tutorial!

Then I went round, as you can see, in white doing the same again, then finally a single crochet row in pink.
So I've made it a mission to make her a baby blanket. Yes, I know it's a bit late, but how did I know she was going to be so adorable?

To make it simple, I've opted for using mostly plain granny squares with a few flowers dotted here and there.
The pattern for the granny square can be found anywhere - I got mine from this book.
For the flower square I used this pattern from rose hip - it's absolutely gorgeous and perfect for adding a personal touch. My only change was between rows 5 and 6, as I wanted the square to be a little bigger so I added another round of *3dc ch1* etc.
It's so easy to make and really works up quickly..

You will need:

Chunky wool - 200g - 300g depending on the length and width of your scarf. I used 200g and had enough left to make tassels, but it's all down to you.

6.5mm knitting needles

Darning needle

Cast on an odd number of stitches. I used 25, and this made quite a wide scarf - about 7 inches wide.

Row 1: K1 *P1 K1* repeat this.

And there you go! Do this across each row. I think this is called 'moss stitch', but it looks a lot more effective than it sounds :)

I feel like I barely stopped! I have to apologise for my lack of blogging, but I assure you I will make it up to you. I have two new scarf patterns ready to go, and once the photographs are taken they'll be up :)

To keep you satisfied for the moment though, I have a great, easy and super quick breakfast pancake recipe. We had all these ingredients in our kitchen already, so it's great for a lazy Sunday morning brekkie without any hassle.

Breakfast Pancakes
Makes roughly 12 breakfast-sized pancakes

You will need;

1 large egg

About 150g self-raising flour

250ml semi-skimmed milk

A pinch of salt

30g butter (to be added to the pan in increments)

Lemon, sugar, jam, honey, treacle, syrup - basically whatever you fancy - to serve

Crack the egg into a bowl with the flour, salt and milk and mix to get a smooth thick batter. Add some butter to a non-stick frying pan and heat on a medium flame. Add 3-4 small ladles of batter to the pan and cook for about 2 minutes. Turn them when the bottom starts to go brown and cook for another 2 minutes. Make sure the pancakes are brown on both sides, otherwise they'll still be uncooked inside. Serve!

Easy, huh?

A long while. Last Sunday we didn't get a chance to back seeing as my boyfriend and I were so busy with uni/school work, and the Sunday before that... Well. We decided to make some White Chocolate cupcakes from a recipe mum had mysteriously found and couldn't remember where from.

It did not go well.

They tasted nice when they were just out of the oven - gooey white chocolate lumps with a bit of a crunchy topping... mmmmm. But as soon as they were left to cool - duhn duhn duuh - they were horrible! They tasted more like scones than anything else. Very dry for a cupcake.

Don't be fooled by how they look! You can tell in the first picture how little they rose, even though the recipe asked for a whole table spoonful of baking powder!

On the plus side I am making a scarf for my friend for Christmas, and as soon as it's finished I'll post the pattern. It's super easy and makes up pretty quickly as it uses chunky wool! I'm also making this cute dolphin for my dolphin-obsessed friend, and it's turning out great so far.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01969396544310442186noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3645965136875537083.post-26412266613157476542012-11-13T14:59:00.001+00:002013-03-29T19:58:41.979+00:00Poppy pattern
As you probably know it was remembrance Sunday this Sunday,
and so instead of Sunday baking I decided to make a crochet poppy. Don't worry,
I still donated :) So, here we go! You'll need a 4.00mm hook and some red and
some black DK wool.

Seeing how people have said they wanted to use my pattern and what they thought has made my week, and I want to thank all of you!

Now, this week has been a little different as it was half term at school, and so the two 'Sunday Baking' days became one 'Wednesday Baking'. One of my all-time favourites is Lemon Meringue Pie and I was so excited about making one! We used a tried and well tested recipe from Mary Berry's Day By Day Cooking. I'd definitely recommend getting this book if you can find it! It's got so many good recipies - another one of our favourites is the chicken curry. Me being a student and hopefully moving away to uni after my gap year I'll definitely be taking this book with me. Here are the photo's;
I can't post the recipe here for copyright reasons (I'm guessing), but if you want a free recipe a quick google search gives some good results.
I'm also working on a granny square blanket! It's been a long haul, but finally I'm at the joining stage! Seeing as I'm not one for dressing up in skimpy outfits in freezing October, I thought the best way to get into the Halloween spirit was to make up some practical things! And here they are, my Halloween hat and gloves...

For both use a 4.00 mm hook and DK wool. You will need just under 100g of orange and a little bit of green. (Pattern in * -- * is repeated to the end of the round.) This pattern uses US crochet terms.

Hat: using orange DK

R1: Ch6 and join with slip stitch to form circle

R2: Ch3, DC 17 times in circle and slip stitch to beginning Ch3 (18)

R3: Ch3, DC into the last round’s Ch3, then DC twice in each stitch. Slip stitch to beginning Ch3 (36)

R4: Ch3, DC twice into next stitch, *DC, DC twice in next stitch*. Slip stitch to beginning Ch3 (54)

R5: Ch3, DC into next stitch, then DC twice into following stitch. *2DC, DC twice in next stitch*. Slip stitch to beginning Ch3 (72)

R6: Ch3, DC into next two stitches, then DC twice into third. *3DC, DC twice in next stitch*. Slip stitch to beginning Ch3 (90)

R7: Ch3, DC into next three stitches, then DC twice into fourth. *4DC, DC twice in next stitch*. Slip stitch to beginning Ch3 (108)

R8: Ch3, DC into next four stitches, then DC twice into fifth. *5DC, DC twice in next stitch*. Slip stitch to beginning Ch3 (126)

R9: Ch3, DC into next five stitches, then DC twice into sixth. *6DC, DC twice in next stitch*. Slip stitch to beginning Ch3 (144)

R10: Ch3, DC into next six stitches, then DC twice into seventh. *7DC, DC twice in next stitch*. Slip stitch to beginning Ch3 (162)

R11: Ch3, DC in all. Slip stitch to beginning Ch3 (162)

R12: Ch3, DC in all. Slip stitch to beginning Ch3 (162)

R13: Ch2, SC in 3, dec 1. *SC in 4, dec1*. Slip stitch to beginning Ch2 (135)

R14: Ch2, SC in 2, dec 1. *SC in 3, dec1*. Slip stitch to beginning Ch2 (108)

R15: Ch2, SC in 1, dec 1. *SC in 2, dec1*. Slip stitch to beginning Ch2 (81)

R16: Ch2, dec 1. *SC in 1, dec1*. Slip stitch to beginning Ch2 (54)

R17: Ch2, SC in all. Slip stitch to beginning Ch2 (54)

R18: Ch2, SC in all. Slip stitch to beginning Ch2 (54)

R19: Ch2, SC in all. Slip stitch to beginning Ch2 (54)

Gloves (make two): starting with orange DK

It is important you keep track of the beginning stitch of every round for this, so make sure to use a stitch marker! Or be in a quiet room where you can count to your hearts content..

R1: Ch10 + 1 for turning. Turn (10)

R2: SC in all. Ch1 for turning, then turn. Repeat this another 24 times (so 25 rows of SC in total) or enough to go around your wrist.

R3: Slip stitch the top to the bottom. Bind off.

R4: Work single crochets all around. To fit my hand I single crochet 27 around, and I will use 27 when writing stitch counts at the end of each row – but bear in mind I have slightly smaller hands than average, so if you have particularly large hands, your yarn is not very giving or making this for a man I suggest increasing the number of single crochets in this round.

R5: SC in beginning stitch, SC twice in the next two stitches, then SC all round. (29)

R6: SC in beginning stitch and following stitch, then SC twice in the next two stitches. SC all round. (31)

R7: SC in beginning stitch and following two stitches, then SC twice in the next two stitches. SC all round. (33)

R8: SC in beginning stitch and following three stitches, then SC twice in the next two stitches. SC all round. (35)

R9: SC in all (35)

R10: SC in beginning stitch, Ch5, skip 10 stitches and SC in the 11th. SC all round (30)

R11: SC in all (30) Repeat another 5 times.

Now change to the green DK

R12: SC in all (30) bind off.
Leaf (make three): using green DK

Use this pattern to make your leaves - I made three of the same size and attached one to the back of my hat and one onto the top of each glove. Alternatively you could make smaller ones to go around the top or cuff of your gloves!

It's a delicious-looking recipe for Coffee Walnut Loaf! She didn't make any changes apart from using margarine instead of mascarpone for the filling, and it was simply mouth watering! Unfortunately this meant I didn't get any pictures of the process, but she assures me it was simple.
I'll copy the recipe here, but this is not my own and I do not claim it to be so!

You will need:

For the loaf -

unsalted butter for the tin

225g • 8oz self-raising flour

225g • 8oz light muscovado sugar

½ tsp sea salt

225ml • 8fl oz groundnut oil

4 medium eggs separated

50ml • 1¾ fl oz cold strong black coffee or espresso

50ml • 1¾ fl oz whole milk

75g • 3oz nibbed or chopped walnuts

For the coffee cream inside -

125g • 4½ oz mascarpone or margarine

2 tsp cold strong black coffee or espresso

1 tsp golden syrup

1 tsp icing sugar sifted

For on the top -

100g • 3½ oz icing sugar sifted

1-2 tbsp cold strong black coffee or espresso

6-8 walnut halves to decorate

icing sugar for dusting

1) Preheat the oven to 190C/170C fan/gas 5 and butter a loaf tin about 22cm • 8½ in long, 1.3 litre • 2¼ pt capacity.

2) Sift the flour, sugar and salt into a large bowl. Add the oil, egg yolks, coffee and milk and beat with a wooden spoon until smooth.

3) Whisk the egg whites until stiff in a large bowl using an electric whisk and fold into the mixture in two goes. Stir in the walnuts and transfer the mixture to the cake tin, smoothing the surface.

4) Give the tin several sharp taps on the work surface to bring up any large
air bubbles.

5) Bake for 50-55 minutes until a skewer inserted in the centre comes out clean. Leave the cake to cool in the tin for a few minutes, then run a knife around the edge and turn out on to a wire rack. Place it the right way up and leave to cool. If not icing it straight away, wrap it in clingfilm.

6) To make the coffee cream, spoon the mascarpone/margarine into a bowl and beat in the coffee, then the syrup and icing sugar.

7) Slit the cake horizontally, about two thirds of the way up the sides to account for the risen dome. Spread the cream over the lower half and sandwich with the top.

8) To make the icing, blend the icing sugar and coffee together in a bowl and drizzle down the centre of the cake, smoothing it towards the sides using a palette knife. Don’t worry about completely covering the surface or about it trickling down the sides. Decorate the top with the walnut halves and dust over a little icing sugar. Leave to set for 1 hour.
We didn't have any cinnamon so had to use ground mixed spice, but they'd taste much better with cinnamon! If you like a milder hint, sprinkle on the amount shown in the picture. For those who love cinnamon (like me) sprinkle on a lot more and rub it into the pastry! Then roll up your strip, holding it together by putting a little dab of water on the end when you finish rolling. Cook on gas mark 6 until golden!

Cut out thick strips of pastry and grate some cheese onto them. Try to press the cheese into the strip so it doesn't fall out! Using both hands, twist the strip and put onto a greased tray straight away so it doesn't have much time to untwist! Put them in the oven on gas mark 6 for 6 minutes, then top with some more cheese and put them back in until lovely and goldeny brown!

Enjoy! Don't forget you can freeze some of the uncooked croissants to bake another time!
This means that every Monday/Tuesday there will be a cooking-related post :) And to start off with something simple, this Sunday was "Rice Krispies Cake Day".

As it was all last-minute, the weights are a little off, but when measure we had about:
- 60g milk chocolate
- 20g plain chocolate
- 25g milk chocolate
- 30-40g Rice Krispies

Okay, to start we need to melt the milk and plain chocolate together over a pan of warm water. It's best to use a glass bowl, but really any bowl will do. Don't heat it too fast or the chocolate will burn! It's better to warm slowly rather than fast, so make sure you take this into account.

Once all the chocolate has melted add the Rice Krispies. Mix them together really well so all the Rice Krispies are fully covered.

Then put them into whatever dish or bowl or tray you want them to set in. I used a foil tray that didn't really matter and would be easy to remove once the cake had set.

Next melt the white chocolate the same way you did before. As my handy helper (aka the boyfriend) had this job I didn't get any pictures! Let the chocolate cool for a minute, and then using a teaspoon drizzle it over the cake. Work quickly to avoid the splodges I got! It's best to practice a couple of times before hand to make sure you get it just right.

Finally, let the cake set for as long as possible in room temperature. This helps to keep the white chocolate looking glossy!

When finished cut using a sharp knife and serve :')

I decided that seeing as I'd never worn the hat anyway I might as well make it into something a bit more my style!

This hat combines knitting and crochet work.

I've lost the original pattern I used to make this hat, but if you're very adept at knitting you may be able to make one knowing that I started off with 53 stitches, did k1p1 for about 7 rows, and then did stocking stitch for about 18 - 20 rows. then do k3 k2tog for a row, purl a row, then k2 k2tog for a row, the purl a row, then k1 k2tog and see how that looks! :P If I can remember correctly, that's what I did - but no promises!

If you don't want to try using the above, or it doesn't work (in this case please leave a comment so I can take it off) then I suggest using this pattern. It should give a similar result, although I haven't tried it yet myself.

Make sure to use red ARAN wool for the hat to make it nice and warm, and then DK white and black.

So, once you've made your hat, you need to make the face!

This pattern uses US terms.

Start with the eyes - using black DK and a 4mm crochet hook (make two)

R1: Make a magic ring and ch3, then do 6 dc into the ring. Pull the end so you make a round black eye like this:
